Greece family-visit visa from India: the official document checklist, decoded

The checklist, as published

1. Application form for a Schengen visa, fully filled in and signed by the applicant
2. Two recent passport-size colour photographs, white background, ICAO specifications
3. Passport valid three months beyond visa end date, at least two blank pages, issued within previous ten years
4. Travel medical insurance for all Member States and entire stay, minimum EUR 30,000, from accepted Indian insurers
5. Clear photocopy of first and last passport page including photocopies of all visas and stamps
6. Previous passport (if applicable)
7. Cover letter explaining the details of visit
8. Proof of means of transport (return flight reservation; intra-Schengen transport if several States)
9. Proof of lodging: with family/friend, proof of sponsorship and/or private accommodation from host (national form if required)
10. Proof of financial means: original bank statement last three months stamped and signed; attested ITR acknowledgments last two assessment years
11. Employment proof (pay slips 3 months, contract, holiday approval) or company registration / pension statements as applicable
12. If sponsored: sponsorship / private accommodation form of the Schengen State plus sponsor's financial documents attached to each application
13. Relationship proof rules for spouses / engaged couples (endorsement, MEA-apostilled certificate or affidavit)
14. Minors: notarised parental consent rules, parents' passport copies / birth certificate, school ID if student
15. Family/friends-specific: certificate proving the existence of family relationship, if applicant is visiting relatives

What each item is for

Every Schengen checklist is Article 14(1) of the Visa Code made specific: (a) purpose of the journey, (b) accommodation, (c) means of subsistence for the stay and the return, (d) information enabling an assessment of your intention to leave before the visa expires. Read the list above with those four heads in mind: bookings and invitations answer (a) and (b); bank statements, salary slips and tax returns answer (c); employment, business, family and property papers answer (d). For a family or friends visit the host's documents carry the weight: proof of the host's status in Greece, the relationship, and, where the mission uses one, its own hospitality or sponsorship form. A missing or informal invitation is the classic route to ground 2 or 10 on the refusal form.

Processing time, as stated by the mission

"As per Schengen legislation, the stipulated processing time of an application is up to 15 working days, calculated from the day the application has been received by the Embassy of Greece and it is considered admissible. That period may be extended up to a maximum of 45 calendar days in individual cases. Time for the delivery of applications from India: from New Delhi 5 days; from the rest of India 6 to 8 days." (source) The Visa Code sets 15 calendar days from an admissible application, extendable to 45 (Article 23).

Fee, as stated by the mission

"GVCW fee table (verified 2026-08-17, no date printed): Schengen short stay (type C) EUR 90 = INR 9,720; minors under 12 and other exempt categories gratis; service fee EUR 30 payable in INR per application over and above the visa fee, calculated daily on the ECB EUR/INR rate; payable in cash or UPI in INR." (source) The euro amounts are fixed by Article 16: EUR 90 adults, EUR 45 children six to eleven, free under six.
