eSIM for Europe from India: what to check so your phone works the day you land

The visa gets you in. The eSIM is what lets you show the border officer your hotel booking without hunting for airport Wi-Fi.

Before you buy

  • Compatibility: eSIM needs an eSIM-capable, carrier-unlocked phone; check the model list and that your Indian carrier's lock is off.
  • Coverage list: match it against every country you will physically be in, including transit airports and non-Schengen legs (the United Kingdom, Serbia, Türkiye, Georgia and others are often sold separately).
  • Regional plans: many "Europe" plans ride on an EU operator and cover the EU/EEA under the bloc's roam-like-at-home rules; check whether Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the Balkans are included, because they frequently are not.
  • Data, validity, speed caps, hotspot: read the fair-use terms; some plans throttle after a quota or block tethering.
  • Calls and SMS: most travel eSIMs are data-only. Keep your Indian SIM active on roaming for OTPs from your bank, or set up app-based authentication before you leave.

On the day

Install the eSIM on Wi-Fi at home, keep the primary line for SMS, switch data to the travel eSIM on landing, and turn off data roaming on the Indian line unless you intend to use it.
