If you are refused

Germany abolished the free remonstration procedure in India from 1 January 2024 (worldwide from 1 July 2025). The only legal remedy against a refusal is a lawsuit before the Administrative Court Berlin (Verwaltungsgericht Berlin), with a court fee of EUR 483 payable up front; otherwise re-apply at any time. Deadline: one month after receiving the refusal.

Schengen (C) applications lodged at any VFS centre in India are forwarded to the Consulate General Mumbai for decision (page 1908750, 30.07.2024). The EC statistics agree only in part: Mumbai reported 130,562 of Germany's 153,179 India applications in 2025, while New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Bengaluru still reported some.
