Germany abolished the free remonstration procedure in India from 1 January 2024 (worldwide from 1 July 2025). The only legal remedy against a refusal is a lawsuit before the Administrative Court Berlin (Verwaltungsgericht Berlin), with a court fee of EUR 483 payable up front; otherwise re-apply at any time. Deadline: one month after receiving the refusal.

The EC statistics agree only in part: Mumbai reported 130,562 of Germany's 153,179 India applications in 2025, while New Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Bengaluru still reported some.
