Schengen visa statistics for India, 2024: who applied, who was refused, and by whom
In 2024, 1,108,239 uniform visa applications were lodged at Schengen consulates in India (11.1 lakh). 936,748 visas were issued and 165,266 were refused, a refusal rate of 14.9% against 15.7% in 2023. India was the #3 country of application worldwide, behind China and Türkiye. Worldwide, 11,716,723 applications were decided that year with a refusal rate of 14.6%.

What refusals cost in 2024
The visa fee is not refunded on refusal. At the standard adult fee in force (EUR 90 per application; the standard adult fee rose from EUR 80 to EUR 90 on 11 June 2024, so part of this year was charged at EUR 80), the 165,266 refusals of 2024 represent up to EUR 14,873,940 in non-refundable visa fees alone. This is an upper-bound estimate: children aged 6 to 11 pay half, some categories are exempt, and it excludes outsourcer service charges, insurance, and any bookings lost.
