Schengen visa statistics for India, 2022: who applied, who was refused, and by whom
In 2022, 671,928 uniform visa applications were lodged at Schengen consulates in India (6.7 lakh). 541,094 visas were issued and 121,188 were refused, a refusal rate of 18.0% against 22.8% in 2021. India was the #3 country of application worldwide, behind Türkiye and Russian Federation. Worldwide, 7,572,755 applications were decided that year with a refusal rate of 17.5%.

What refusals cost in 2022
The visa fee is not refunded on refusal. At the standard adult fee in force (EUR 80 per application), the 121,188 refusals of 2022 represent up to EUR 9,695,040 in non-refundable visa fees alone. This is an upper-bound estimate: children aged 6 to 11 pay half, some categories are exempt, and it excludes outsourcer service charges, insurance, and any bookings lost.
